Protein FAQs
Protein bars are nutritional snack bars. They’re like regular snack bars, but high in protein. They come in a variety of flavours and nutritional profiles and they’re an easy way to increase your daily protein intake or use as pre-workout fuel or post-workout recovery.
Protein bars allow you to increase your daily protein intake. If you do regular resistance training, you need to consume higher levels of protein to support muscle maintenance, growth and recovery. High-protein bars are a convenient way to increase your protein intake, ready for extra protein whenever you need it between meals.
The timing of eating protein is less important than increasing total daily protein intake, and high-protein protein bars are useful for that. In terms of whether you should eat a protein bar before or after a workout, they contain some carbohydrates that can give you a much-needed glucose boost to help fuel your workout. This makes them a good option pre-workout. For post-workout, protein bars are a convenient alternative to protein shakes. Eating a protein bar after your session provides 20g of protein for muscle protein synthesis.
Are protein bars good for you? Well, this all depends on your current diet, activity level and health goals. Protein bars are high in protein, high in fibre and a great alternative to other snacks. Protein bars may contribute to weight gain if you already consume enough calories through your diet and your energy expenditure is lower than your intake. However, for active people who want to build or maintain muscle mass, a high-protein diet could help you achieve your goals. Protein from whole foods is better, but protein bars are a convenient, sweet-tasting alternative.
Yes, there’s no definitive reason why you shouldn’t. But there are a few things to consider here. Firstly, the macros of different protein bars vary. Some might have more carbs, and some might have more fat. If you’re looking for a certain macro split, check whether the bar you’ve chosen fits your macros. Our protein bars contain 20g protein and <3.5g sugar.
Most protein bars on the market are not vegetarian as they contain gelatine, which comes from a bovine source (cattle). The MACRO MUNCH™ Protein Bar, however, is gelatin-free. This means all Bulk™ protein bars are vegetarian-friendly.
Protein bars come in many flavours, including Chocolate Hazelnut, Salted Caramel, Cherry Bakewell and White Chocolate Peanut Butter. Protein bars are sweetened with low amounts of sugar (<3.5g), meaning they taste great without overloading your sugar levels. High protein bars have a creamy, dairy texture because they use dairy-sourced proteins, such as whey protein.
A meal replacement bar is similar to a protein bar but usually higher in calories, fat, and fibre, marketed to replace meals. They are different to protein bars. Protein bars are a high-protein snack bar, not intended to replace a meal. Use protein bars as a way to increase your protein intake alongside your regular meals, not to replace them.
Protein bars typically have a shelf life of 12 months, but you can find the precise Best Before date on the outside wrapper of each bar. To keep protein bars fresh, store them in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
