What is Vitargo®?
Vitargo® is the ultimate sports performance carbohydrate, delivering rapid glycogen resynthesis to the muscles (70% faster than other carbohydrates such as Dextrose and Maltodextrin). Using Vitargo to rapidly refuel glycogen has been shown to improve performance and recovery in peer reviewed research studies!
BULK POWDERS™ supplies Vitargo® S2, which is the super-soluble form of Vitargo®. Starch-based products in general do not mix well in liquids, however this form of Vitargo® has been produced in such a way that solubility is not an issue.***
How is Vitargo® different to other carbohydrate sources?
Vitargo® consists of much larger carbohydrate molecules than other sugar-based carbohydrates such as Dextrose, Fructose, Sucrose and Maltodextrin; which are often the preserve of the mainstream sports drinks you find in various gyms and supermarkets. These larger molecules ultimately enable Vitargo® to move through the stomach 80% faster than the aforementioned products. The result of this is that Vitargo® is absorbed extremely quickly and provides almost instant energy to working muscles. Furthermore when Vitargo® is consumed after training or competition, it replenishes muscle glycogen levels 70% faster than other sports drinks, enabling faster recovery and an increase in performance of approximately 23%! What’s more Vitargo® is also 100% sugar-free!
What is important to note here is that these claims are backed by clinical testing (carried out at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm) and are not examples of the exaggerated claims that product manufacturer’s often make. To view these clinical studies please click here and here.
Where to find Vitargo®:
Vitargo® is produced from barley starch. Barley starch is naturally occurring in foodstuffs such as cereals and grains. These products will not however have anywhere near the same properties as Vitargo® due to the patented process by which it is produced.
Vitargo® can also be referred to as:
Vitargo® Powder, Vitargo® S2, Pure Vitargo®, Super-Soluble Vitargo®.
Why use Vitargo®?
Supplementing with Vitargo® can have numerous benefits on sporting performance:
Due to the rapid nature in which Vitargo® passes through the stomach, it is absorbed by the working muscles 80% faster than sugar based carbohydrates such as dextrose and maltodextrin. This means that Vitargo® is the best way for athletes to gain almost instant energy and without suffering from the ‘crash’ or ‘come-down’ inevitably experienced with sugar-based products. To this extent Vitargo® is an ideal supplement for endurance athletes such as tri-athletes, long-distance runners and cyclists, but would also be beneficial for anybody participating on physical activity for 45 minutes or longer.
It is stated that endurance athletes should undertake carbohydrate loading for around 3 days prior to competition. For an average 75kg person this would mean approximately 600g of digestible carbohydrates per day, or the equivalent of 2.5kg of boiled pasta! This is almost impossible for most people to consume, but using Vitargo® this would simply mean drinking around 5 x 75g servings on top of your daily food intake.
Alongside carbohydrate loading it is vital to ensure that blood sugar levels remain elevated during competition or intense training periods. When blood sugar levels start to decrease it is scientifically proven that levels of performance also drop. It is recommended that for every hour of exertion you should consume around 1g-1.5g of carbohydrates per kg of bodyweight. A 75kg athlete should therefore be taking on around 75g-112g of carbohydrates per hour during exercise. Using Vitargo® is the ideal way to ensure your body receives this necessary amount of carbohydrates to keep blood sugar levels elevated and thereby ensuring optimal physical performance.
Taking Vitargo® immediately after exercise has been proven to replenish muscle glycogen 70% faster than other carbohydrates. Low glycogen levels lead to fatigue and extend recovery periods needed after exercise. Supplementing with Vitargo® can prevent fatigue, muscle soreness and also reduce recovery periods needed between training sessions.
What is the molecular weight of Vitargo®?
Vitargo® 500,000 – 700,000 Maltodextrin 1,000 - 10,000 Starch Syrup 250 – 1000 Dextrose (Sucrose) 180
Will supplementing with Vitargo® cause bloating?
During clinical testing and studies, scientists found that Vitargo® passes through the stomach 80% faster than other carbohydrates such as maltodextrin and dextrose. This means that Vitargo® is rapidly utilised by the working muscles and does not sit in the stomach for any length of time; as a result users of Vitargo® should not experience the bloated feeling associated with consuming large amounts of carbohydrates. In contrast the other carbohydrates that sit in the stomach for 80% longer, act almost like a sponge, drawing water and ultimately causing the bloated feeling you may be familiar with.
When is the best time to take Vitargo®?
Vitargo® is a supplement and so can be consumed whenever you wish to fit in around your dietary needs. The optimal times to take it however are prior to, during and immediately post-exercise. It can also be used for carbohydrate loading whilst leading up to intense training periods or competition; this involves loading the body with as many carbohydrates as possible in the prior days. This could for example involve consuming one serving of Vitargo® between each and every meal, which over the course of a day could add around 400g of carbohydrates to your diet, something that would be very difficult to achieve through solid foods.
Do elite athletes use Vitargo®?
Yes. Vitargo® was used extensively by the large majority of athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is used by other elite and professional athletes including cyclists, runners, tri-athletes, rugby players, football players, weight-lifters and bodybuilders on a regular basis.
Is Vitargo® sugar-free?
Yes, Vitargo® is completely sugar free.
Is Vitargo® suitable for vegetarians and/or vegans?
Yes, Vitargo® is made from barley starch and is entirely suitable for vegetarians AND vegans.
Can I mix Vitargo® with other supplements?
This is perfectly fine and is in fact very beneficial. It can be combined with products such as creatine, amino acids and protein to improve their rate of absorption, essentially acting as a high-speed shuttle delivering these vital nutrients to working muscles. Please note however that Vitargo® should not be mixed with other sugar-based carbohydrates as this will negate its effects.
Mix 2.5 scoops (approximately 75g) with 500ml water. The best times to use Vitargo include pre, during and post-exercise.
During exercise you should look to consume 1g-1.5g of Vitargo® per hour for every 1kg of bodyweight. For a 75kg athlete this would equate to around 75g-112g per hour.
Vitargo® can be combined with most products, from amino acids such as Glutamine and BCAA; to Creatine and Pure Whey Protein™.
