What are Raspberry Ketones?
Raspberry Ketones aid in the release of body fat for energy; this makes it a useful ingredient for both fat loss and sports performance. Raspberry Ketones are used in many fat loss formulas, to provide an alternative mechanism of action to more common fat loss nutrients. They have also been shown to improve focus and concentration, and suppress appetite.
Raspberry Ketones were first used as a flavour enhancer in around 1918. However it was not until around 2004 that researchers realised they could potentially be used for fat loss purposes. Since initial studies proved so popular, this ingredient has now become a key component of many fat loss supplements.
Where to find Raspberry Ketones:
It may not be much of a surprise but Raspberry Ketones are indeed found in raspberries. What may be more surprising is that they are also present in rhubarb roots, cranberries and pine needles.
Raspberry Ketones can also be referred to as:
Raspberry Ketones Powder, RK, 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one
What do Raspberry Ketones do?
Prevent Fat Storage
Raspberry Ketones cause hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) to locate itself within fat cells. Once inside fat cells, HSL breaks down fat molecules into various fatty acids, which can then be metabolised. This process is known as lipolysis and is essential for preventing fat storage. Unless HSL is present then lipolysis will not take place, so the provision of HSL by raspberry ketones is a reflection of how this supplement can act as an important fat loss agent by preventing fat storage. This was evidenced in trials conducted on mice in Japan. The mice were on a high-fat and high-sugar diet yet by supplementing the mice with Raspberry Ketones, researchers noted that the mice not only did not store extra fat, but actually lost weight.
Thermogenics contribute to fat loss by raising the body’s core temperature and thus increasing its metabolism. Raspberry Ketones have a very similar chemical structure to two well known thermogenic ingredients; synephrine (citrus aurantuim) and capsaicin. Both synephrine and capsaicin are well known to stimulate the beta-3 receptors of the nervous system, which causes an increase in metabolic rate (thus burning more calories) and increased lipolysis. Research shows that Raspberry Ketones also appear to stimulate these beta-3 receptors, thus acting thermogenically.
Are Raspberry Ketones only useful for fat loss?
The primary benefit of using a Raspberry Ketones supplement is its fat loss inducing properties. Nevertheless Raspberry Ketones have also been shown to:
- Improve focus and concentration
- Suppress appetite
- Reduce fatty deposits within blood vessels

It is believed that combining Raspberry Ketones with other nutrients increases their effectiveness. Examples of products that Raspberry Ketones would work well with include Green Coffee, Tyrosine and ALCAR.
After some time of not even trying as weight just finds me, I tired these as there were the cheapest I could find- but cheap does not mean low quality, Ive been on these for a month now- not being increasing my exercise but been losing some weight! So happy! On 12/02/2015 Charlotte said...
Put some oil on a spoon and place the ketones in it. Wait some time until it dissolves slightly. Then do Ayurvedic oil pulling or oil swishing with it.
Or just put in Coca Cola. Pepsi not tested yet! On 11/04/2013 biowolf said...
Tastes bad does not melt in water, but possible to drink. I use it 3 weeks now and it helps with my diet.
Even though the first week, every time after drinking it I was feeling high and my heart was beating way too fast, but now I am used to it.
