What are Glutamine Peptides?
Regular L-Glutamine is known as ‘free form’ glutamine. This is because it is free from being bonded to by other amino acids. In contrast, Glutamine Peptides are not free, they are bonded to by other amino acids and peptides, making them more stable and faster absorbing.
Where to find Glutamine Peptides:
BulkPowders.co.uk glutamine peptides are not found naturally, they have been specifically engineered for us to absorb at approximately double the rate of regular l-glutamine.
Glutamine itself however, is one of the most abundant amino acids and is produced naturally in our muscles. It is also found in foods such as meat, fish, spinach and dairy products.
Glutamine Peptides can also be referred to as:
L-Glutamine Peptides, Peptide Bonded Glutamine, Glutamine Peptide, L-Glutamine Peptide, Bonded Glutamine Peptides.
Glutamine Peptides vs. L-Glutamine: Which is better?
Neither glutamine peptides nor l-glutamine are recognised as being ‘better’. Glutamine peptides however, do have certain advantages over regular glutamine supplements.
- Research suggests that anywhere between 50-85% of l-glutamine does not actually make it to the muscle tissue. Instead it is used in other metabolic processes involving the immune system, liver, gut, pancreas and intestines. So although l-glutamine does help increase muscle mass and prevent muscle loss, the majority of it is used to carry out other health-related functions. In contrast, due to their fast absorption, glutamine peptides bypass these metabolic processes and are delivered directly to the muscle tissue. Essentially this suggests that glutamine peptides may be superior to regular glutamine when comparing their muscle-building and muscle-sparing properties.
- They are absorbed faster — The digestive tract has special peptide transport systems which mean that peptides are absorbed and used quicker than l-glutamine. This is extra beneficial for athletes and bodybuilders who supplement with glutamine immediately after workouts.
- They are more stable — Glutamine peptides are more stable in solution, at higher temperatures and at lower PH’s than l-glutamine.
Why use Glutamine Peptides?
As far as supplementing with glutamine peptides goes, we can confidently say that they have the same effect on performance as supplementing with regular l-glutamine would, if not a greater impact due to their superior absorption.
The benefits of supplementing with glutamine peptides include:
Building Muscle — A recent study showed that supplementing with just 2g of glutamine, increased growth-hormone levels by four times. To this extent glutamine is an excellent supplement for athletes participating in sports or events requiring strength and speed, or simply those looking to build muscle.
Preventing Muscle Loss — During exercise glutamine is ‘stripped’ from our muscles, which can lead to muscle loss or wasting. Consequently, anybody who undertakes exercise can benefit from supplementing with glutamine peptides due to its potential to reduce this breakdown of muscle-tissue. It has for example been used successfully in hospitals to prevent muscle wasting in the chronically ill. Glutamine also plays a vital role in protein synthesis, which is necessary for muscle growth and repair.
Improving Recovery — Low levels of glutamine are common in athletes who are overtraining. Overtraining results in poor performance, risk of infection and bad moods. In contrast, high levels of glutamine help shuttle other vital amino acids into the muscle cells, and therefore improve recovery times of the user.
Why use Glutamine Peptides?
Although the majority of glutamine peptides are delivered directly to the muscle tissue, they still have the same potential health benefits as l-glutamine. These include:
Maintaining a Healthy Body - As mentioned previously, glutamine is involved in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid. This is because it is needed in very large quantities to maintain the correct functioning of our immune system, liver, pancreas, kidneys, gallbladder, intestines and gut.
Providing ‘Brain Food’ — Supplementing with glutamine peptides increases levels of glutamic acid in the body. Glutamic acid is known as our main ‘Brain Food’. It has also been shown that glutamine contributes to improving intelligence, and can enhance mental focus and mood.
Preventing Illness and Infection - When we exercise our bodies suffer a large rise in the number of free-radicals, but a drop in the number of antioxidants available to fight them. This imbalance can lead to illness and infections, especially in very active individuals. Research has found that this risk of illness and infection appears to reduce in people with high levels of glutamine; as a result it is often used in hospitals to both prevent infection and promote healing in burns victims.

Serving Size
For athletes and bodybuilders we would recommend taking 3g-5g of glutamine peptides, 1-3 times daily.
If you are specifically looking for the health benefits associated with glutamine supplements then we would suggest using regular l-glutamine. This does not mean that glutamine peptides have no health benefits, it is simply that you can achieve them through supplementing with regular l-glutamine, which is the cheaper of the two products!
Timing
Glutamine peptides are best taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. They are ideally used first thing in the morning and immediately after a workout or exercise.
Synergists
There are no known synergists of glutamine peptides. They are best taken on an empty stomach, so to this extent they should be taken separately to other supplements you may be using.
Safety
Glutamine peptides are a safe and effective supplement.
Toxicity
There is no known toxicity of glutamine peptides.
Bans/Restrictions for Use
As far as we are aware there are no known bans or restrictions in regard to supplementing with glutamine peptides.
