What is L-Leucine?

L-Leucine is an essential amino acid, in that we require it from either food or supplementation. It is also one of the three Branch Chain Amino Acids’ (BCAA’s) along with Isoleucine and Valine.

Where to find L-Leucine:

Any high-protein food will contain some L-Leucine. The foods highest in L-Leucine are red meat and dairy products. Supplements such as Whey and Egg Protein are also good sources.

Other names for L-Leucine:

Leucine, D-Leucine.

Why use L-Leucine?

Leucine is an excellent supplement for anybody who exercises regularly. The main reasons for its use by athletes are:

Increase Muscle Mass — Leucine has been shown to increase growth hormone production and maintain high testosterone levels in males. This makes it an excellent choice for anybody looking to increase muscle mass.

Prevent Muscle Loss — Just as Leucine can increase muscle growth, it is equally, if not more efficient, at preventing muscle wastage. It is often used in hospitals to prevent muscle loss in patients who are recovering from surgery.

Increase Energy & Endurance — Leucine is regarded as the most important of the BCAA’s when it comes to energy production. Research has indicated that as much as 90% of our dietary Leucine is used to provide energy when we are exercising. If we do not have enough Leucine then this can serve to ‘limit’ our performance. Supplementing with Leucine (or obtaining it through our diet) is therefore crucial for optimal energy and performance levels.

Why use L-Leucine?

As a general health supplement Leucine has no major benefits, however it does serve to:

Prevent Muscle Loss — Even for non-athletes this is of importance. The elderly for example, are likely to be lacking in Leucine, hence why muscle wastage occurs as we grow older. Supplementing with Leucine has been shown to prevent this muscle wastage and is the reason why it is often used by bed-ridden and recovery patients.

Improve Healing — Leucine is used by the body to heal skin wounds and bone damage. This is because it protects muscle tissue and stimulates protein synthesis. Higher levels of Leucine may therefore serve to speed recovery from injury. Leucine has also been used successfully in the treatment of liver disorders, renal failure and allergies.

Provide Pain Relief - L-Leucine has a ‘mirror image’ called D-Leucine, which is believed to lower the breakdown of the body’s natural pain killer. To this extent Leucine may act indirectly to reduce pain.

Signs of L-Leucine Deficiency:

Directions
Serving Size

We recommend taking 2-3g 1-3 times daily.
